Summary

Chandra Mani Srivastava obtained his MSc (Physics) (1952) from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and PhD (1957) from Imperial College, London while working on the microwave properties of ferrites, an area that soon dominated the telecommunication and satellite communication industries worldwide. On his return from UK, he joined the Department of Physics, IIT Bombay, Mumbai (1958) and also worked there as Head, Advanced Center for Research in Electronics and the Materials Science Centre (1976-92) till his retirement on superannuation. Presently, he is Emeritus Professor at IIT Bombay.

Academic and Research Achievements: Srivastava established a prestigious centre of research on microwave magnetics with facilities for preparation and characterization of advanced materials required by industries and the Department of Defense. He actively worked to unravel the mystery of two most puzzling manifestations of nature, the understanding of which could revolutionize the industry: the superconductivity in oxides and the colossal magnetoresistance in manganites. His models, Cooper pairing by the Darwin interaction in superconductivity and the polaron transport by Josephson tunneling in manganites may one day open new chapters in 'condensed matter physics' and lead to world's independence from fossil fuels for energy. He was consultant to many ferrite industries in the country and is known as 'Father of Ferrites' in India. He has written advanced text books on materials science and relativity that are used in many prestigious academic institutes at home and abroad. He mentored a large number of students including more than 25 PhD students.

Other Contributions: Srivastava has been Member of the Advisory Board of Directors of the International Conference in Ferrites, Tokyo, and is the only Indian to attend all the prestigious ten international conferences held all over the world (1970-2008), the fifth organized by him in India. He is Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Awards and Honours: Professor Srivastava was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad.
