Summary

Dipti Kumar Chattoraj obtained his BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees in Chemistry from the Calcutta University. From 1952 to 1956, he was Palit Research Scholar in the University College of Science, Kolkata and obtained PhD degree on 'Stability of Colloids' under the guidance of Professor BN Ghosh. He was also awarded DSc degree from the same University in 1972 on his thesis "Thermodynamics of Adsorption of Organic Ions". He served as a Post-doctorate Fellow in the Biochemistry Department, University of Iowa, USA (1957-59) and also as Visiting Research Associate in the same Institute (1968-71). Here he carried out research on biophysical chemistry of proteins and nucleic acids in collaboration with Professor Henry Bull. He was a Visiting Professor for a year at Fysisk Kemisk Institut, Denmark (1979-80) and at in Nagoya University, Japan (2001). Chattoraj was INSA Senior Scientist (1995-99) and INSA Honorary Scientist (2001-05).

Academic and Research Achievements: Chattoraj served Jadavpur University, Kolkata as lecturer (1960-72) and Reader (1973-81) in Chemistry Department and Professor and Head, Department of Food Technology and Biochemical Engineering (1982 -94). He carried out extensive research in surface chemistry and biophysical chemistry. His research areas are mainly soluble and insoluble monolayers, adsorption of surfactants, biopolymers and water vapour on different types of interfaces, electrokinetic phenomena of colloids, electrophoresis of adsorbed biopolymers, surfactant-biopolymer binding interactions, protein stabilized emulsions, colloidal properties of human bile, protein-nucleic acid and protein-lipid binding interaction. He has published altogether 165 original papers. Along with Professor Birdi of Danish Technical University, Chattoraj has written a Monograph entitled Adsorption from Solution and Gibbs Surface Excess (Plenum Press, New York, 1984). He has guided 26 PhD students.

Other Contributions: Professor Chattoraj served as a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journals Colloids and Surfaces and Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Surface Science & Technology. He served as a member of DST Committees, PAC (1984-87, 1991-93) Mathematics Education and Research (1990-91) and Chemistry Panel of UGC (1994-96). He had established Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology (1983) and served as Vice President of Indian Chemical Society.

Awards and Honours: Professor Chattoraj had been awarded Professor PK Bose Memorial Award from Indian Chemical Society (1996), Professor BN Ghosh Memorial Award of Indian Society of Surface Science & Tech (2003), Professor Sushil Mukherjee Birthday Oration Lecture Award by West Bengal Academy of Science (2003), Professor JN Mukherjee Memorial Award (2006), Gold Medal from Indian Chemical Society (2007), Chemical Research Society of India Gold Medal (2008), Bangalore and PC Ray Gold Medal of 93rd Indian Science Congress Association. He was elected as Foundation Fellow of West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology (1988) and served as Sectional President in Biochemistry for Indian Science Congress (1993).
