Summary

Ashit Baran Roy received BSc (Hons) in 1959, MSc in 1961 and PhD in 1965, all from the Jadavpur University. After his doctoral studies on interrelation of metamorphism and structure from a part of the Singhbhum Shear Zone, he joined faculty of the University of Rajasthan and continued his studies in various aspects of superposed folding in the Aravalli mountains. He was Fellow of Alexander von Humbolt Foundation for his postdoctoral work on evolution of slaty cleavage at the Ruhr University Bochum. After retirement, he continued working as Emeritus Fellow/Senior Scientist, Visiting Professor and Project Investigator at Presidency College, Kolkata.

Academic and Research Achievements: Roy's on various aspects of the Precambrian geology of the Aravalli mountains were sponsored by University Grants Commission, Department of Science and Technology, Atomic Minerals Division, Indian National Science Academy, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Limited and Rajasthan State Mineral Development Corporation. During his 30 years of teaching experience in tectonics and precambrian geology, he mentored 14 PhD students on different aspects of crustal evolution of the Aravalli mountains. He also published over 80 research papers, and contributed the chapter 'Geology of Indian Subcontinent' for the 'Encyclopaedia of Geology' published by Elsevier/Academic Press. He also authored the book: Geology of Rajasthan---Precambrian to Recent (Scientific Publishers).

Other Contributions: Roy participated in a number of International Geological Correlation Programmes, and served as Member of its National Working Group. He was also Guest Editor of a number of books and special issues of journals.

Awards and Honours: Professor Roy received many awards including National Mineral Award (1992), Gold Medal for promoting Mineral Exploration Sector by Directorate of Mines and Geology, Rajasthan (1998) and Bellur Rama Rao Birth Centenary Award for contributions in Precambrian Geology of Aravalli Mountains (2001). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He was honoured with publications of two festschrift volumes, Indian Precambrian (Scientific Publishers), and Geology of Rajasthan (ML Sukhadia University Publications).
