Sumit Bhaduri earned his B Sc degree (1968) from Presidency College, Calcutta University, after which he did a Tripos (1971) and PhD (1974) at the University of Cambridge, UK. He was a Royal Society Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Milan (1975) followed by post-doctoral work at Cambridge in 1976. Academic and Research Achievements: On returning to India in 1977, Bhaduri joined Alchemie Research Center, the central research laboratory of the ICI group of companies in India. He along with his other colleagues set up the laboratory and initiated strategic research programmes in general, and homogeneous oxidation and cluster catalyzed reactions in particular. He resigned from ICI India in 1995 and was with ACC Research and Consultancy Directorate from 1996 to 1998, where he worked on environmental catalysts, ceramics, etc. He was with Reliance Industries Limited from 1999 onwards, first as the Head of R&D and then as Senior Scientific Advisor. He has over 100 research articles in his credit and obtained several international patents. He has written a book on Homogeneous Catalysis. Other Contributions: Bhaduri, along with his colleagues, developed the manufacturing technology of Ziegler-Natta polypropylene catalyst at Reliance Industries Limited. He was a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University (US), and also at University of Bordeaux, France. Awards and Honours: Bhaduri was a SERC lecturer and received the SS Bhatnagar Prize in Chemistry (1992). He was elected a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1989). |
