Summary

Rajinder Jeet Hans-Gill obtained her BA (Hons) from Government College for Girls, Ludhiana. She obtained her MA (1962) from Government College, Ludhiana and started her research career at the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, under the guidance of RP Bambah. She obtained her PhD (1965) from Ohio State University and joined the Faculty there moving subsequently to the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1966-67). She then returned to Panjab University as Reader (1967). She visited OSU (1986-88) and also made short academic visits to Austria, Germany, Hungry and UK. After retirement as Professor (2005), she was appointed as Emeritus Professor at Panjab University (2007). She was a Visiting Professor (supported by National Board for Higher Mathematics) at Panjab University from 2005-2008.
She is INSA senior Scientist from 2009.
Academic and Research Achievements: Hans-Gill has made research contributions in number theory, geometry of numbers, and discrete geometry. She worked first on extremal packing and covering sets and later, on double packings and coverings. She obtained several results on non-homogeneous quadratic forms and was able to prove a conjecture of Watson (1962) and a conjecture of Dumir, Bambah and Hans-Gill (a result of collaborations with Bambah, Dumir,Raka & Woods). Later, with Dumir and Wilker, she made contributions to the view-obstruction problem and a conjecture of Schoenberg. Recently she, together with Raka and Sehmi, has given a proof of a conjecture of Woods for inhomogeneous minima of positive definite quadratic forms in 7,8 variables, thereby completing the proof of a conjecture of Minkowski on product of n non-homogeneous real linear forms in n variables for n=7,8.They have also obtained improved estimates on Minkowski conjecture. She has 52 publications.

Other Contributions: Hans-Gill was Dean of University Instruction at Panjab University (2002-04). She was a member of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (2003-06) and is a Member of the for Women in Science constituted by the Indian Academy of Sciences.

Awards and Honours: Hans-Gill received the Narasinga Rao Gold Medal of the Indian Mathematical Society (1971). She is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1982), and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (1998) and is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) (2006). She was a member of the INSA Council (2003-04) and Vice-President (2004-05).She was awarded Srinivasa Ramanujan Birth Centenary gold Medal by ISCA in 2010.
