Anil Ramanbhai Sheth received PhD from University of Bombay. He remained Director, Institute for Research in Reproduction, Mumbai.
Academic and Research Achievements: Sheth had deep interest in reproductive biology, endocrinology, and biochemistry. He carried out extensive research on: (i) regulation of male and female fertility; (ii) protein hormones with regard to purification, characterization, assay and mechanism of hormone action; and (iii) sperm physiology. He isolated and characterized inhibin, consisting of 94 amino-acid residues, which has applications in fertility regulation and detection and therapy of prostatic cancer.
Other Contributions: Sheth edited the book Inhibins: Isolation, Estimation and Physiology (CRC Press, 1987) and served as Member of the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Experimental Biology.
Awards and Honours: Dr Sheth was conferred the Basanti Devi Amirchand Award of ICMR (1987). Lectureship awards won by him include: Oration Lectures of Endocrine Society (1985) and Geriatric Society (1986); and Dr Subhash Mukherjee Memorial Lecture by Indian Cryogenic Council (1988). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Maharashtra Academy of Sciences and Gujarat Academy of Science.
