Kailash Nath Agarwal obtained the MBBS degree from Lucknow University (1959), the DCH at Delhi University (1961), PhD at Uppsala (1965) and MD at Delhi University (1969). He was Director of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow (1990-93) and Director / Dean of the Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi (1994). Academic and Research Achievements: Agarwal's research has been on the effect of corticosteroids on erythrocytes, on mechanism(s) in red cell lysis, leucocyte free alpha nitrogen and amino acid patterns in protein calorie malnutrition, protein energy malnutrition and latent iron deficiency and brain neurotransmitters. He and colleagues have provided national data sets for growth pattern of affluent Indian children. Maternal under nutrition and foetal growth, pregnancy anemia - foeto-placental and breast milk transfer of iron are among the other outstanding studies by his group. He has mentored about 28 students for the PhD degree.

Other Contributions:Professor Agarwal established the Department of Pediatrics; Nutrition Center and Rural Maternal Child Services at the BHU, Varanasi.

Awards and Honours: He was awarded the ST Achar Medal (Indian Academy Pediatrics, 1969), Cdr Shanti Seth Award (1992), Ranbaxy Scientist, Amrut Mody MCH and Hari Om Ashram and Prof K P Bhargava INSA Awards. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences.
