Summary

Khehra Amarjit Singh did his BSc (1953) and MSc (1959) from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and obtained PhD degree (1968) from the Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, specializing in plant breeding. He received Diploma in Experiment Station Management from International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico (1978). He was Director of Research, Punjab Agricultural University.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Singh has developed 16 varieties (maize-12, cotton-3, 'dhaincha-1) for cultivation in Punjab. One maize hybrid (Sartaj) and five maize composites (Parbhat, Navjot, Kiran, Ageti-76, Rattan) have also been released by Central Variety Release Committee. Composite 'Pratap' have been released by Assam State. His innovative research enabled maize cultivation during winter in Punjab. He adopted cold tolerant variety (Partap-1) and production technology as such in Haryana. His research resulted in significant increase in Maize productivity in Punjab. He developed new methods of plant breeding and suggested improvements in modified full-sib selection. Modified S1 selection has high genetic gain and Hico breeding combines intra-and inter-population improvements. He proposed two dual-purpose mating designs that enable simultaneous conduct of selection and genetic analysis. He developed graphic analysis of line x-tester design, and methods to screen germplasm for freezing and non-freezing injuries in maize. He has published about 150 research papers in different journals and written chapters in four books. He has co-authored the book, Advances in Plant Breeding.

Others Contributions: Dr Singh has written about 32 popular sciences articles. He was involved in bringing out several symposium proceedings.

Awards and Honours: Dr Singh is a recipient of Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize of ICAR (1986) and Dr Joginder Singh Memorial Award of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding (1989). He is a Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi (1992). He was Member of Crop Science Society of America; Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding; Crop Improvement Society of India; Indian Society of Ecology; Indian Society of Agronomy and Indian Society of Plant Pathologists.
