Srinivas K Saidapur obtained BSc, MSc and PhD (1974) from Karnatak University, Dharwad. He joined the faculty of the Department of Zoology (1972), Karnatak University and became a Professor (1988) and later Vice-Chancellor (2006-10). He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Kansas Medical Center, University of Kansas (1976-79) with Professor GS Greenwald; Alexander von Humboldt Fellow (1989-90), University of Mainz; Visiting Scientist, National Institute for Basic Biology, Okazaki, Japan; and also held INSA-DFG Exchange Program fellowships (1995 and 2004) at Ruhr University and University of Wurzburg, Germany.

Academic and Research Achievements: Saidapur made outstanding contributions to reproductive biology of vertebrates with special focus on gonadal steroidogenesis, follicular atresia, luteal function, hypothalamic control of gonadal functions and proximate factors controlling reproduction. He successfully evolved protocols for advancing gametogeneis vis-a-vis reproduction in Indian bull frog and for producing frogs of desired sex. He also studied behavioral ecology of anuran tadpoles and agamid lizards. His studies on behavioral ecology of amphibian tadpoles made significant contribution to our knowledge with reference to ideal free distribution (foraging strategy), kin recognition, food detection and predator-prey interactions. He evolved protocols for captive breeding of herpets. He guided 13 PhD students.

Other Contributions: Being on Faculty of Karnatak University, Saidapur was responsible for introduction of new courses on molecular biology, animal behavior and evolutionary biology. As Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, he brought about major reforms in its teaching curricula, research and administration. He also served on the INSA Council (2006-08), VP : 2012-Till Now 

Awards and Honours: Professor Saidapur is a receipient of SS Bhatnagar Prize (1991). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1993), The National Academy of Sciences (NASI), Allahabad (2009) and Thirld World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) 2010. He is a receipient of Professor MRN Prasad Memorial Lecture Award (2007) and Professor Har Swarup Memorial Lecture Award INSA (2010).
