Kambadur Muralidhar obtained his BSc and MSc from Osmania University, Hyderabad and PhD (1976) from IISc, Bangalore, working under NR Moudgal. His PhD work, fetched him the Professor KV Giri Memorial Gold Medal. He was selected for Lectureship in the School of Life Sciences at the newly founded Central University of Hyderabad (1976). He was a Research Associate in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Suny, Buffalo, NY, with OP Bahl (1979-81). He joined the University of Delhi (1983) as Reader in Biochemistry, Professor in Endocrinology (1988) and was Chairman (2001-04), Department of Zoology.

Academic and Research Contributions: Professor Muralidhar has taught courses in biochemistry, gamete biology, immunology, endocrinology and cell biology and medicinal chemistry at University of Hyderabad and at University of Delhi. His work led to the development of the most senstitive RIA for HCF, a pregnancy hormone. He also demonstrated the immuno-contraceptive vaccine potential of DS5-hCG beta subunit. He initiated a long-range research program on water buffalo endocrinology. His laboratory has developed procedures for indigenous production of buffalo hormones like LH, FSH, TSH, GH, and PRL; sensitive homologous immunoassays and heterologous bioassays for these hormones besides characterizing their physico-chemical and immunochemical features. His group was among the first to report that the LH and PRL are sulphated and that this contributes to micro heterogeneity. His laboratory later discovered the presence of tyrosine-O sulphate in sheep and buffalo PRL. Using biophysical techniques his group has studied the unfolding and folding of the buffalo GH. Muralidhar has published over 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has mentored 20 PhD and 21 MPhil students.

Other Contributions: Professor Muralidhar was Chairman of the UGC Curriculum Development Committee of zoology and brought out a benchmark report on MSc and BSc teaching in Zoological sciences. For NCERT he brought out new textbooks for Higher Secondary School Biology in a completely new format backed by a sound philosophy. He assisted University of Delhi in restructuring undergraduate science education and introduced a new Honours course in Integrated Biology, which is first of its kind in the country. He was the Convener of the NET examination and Chairman of the PAC-Animal Sciences of DST for two terms. He has assisted the funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT and DST in various capacities, and served on the Research Advisory Committees of CCMB, IGIB, MRC, NBRC, ARI and NII. He has also assisted in the selection and promotion of Faculty in a number of Educational and Research institutions of the country. He was the Chief Editor of the Proceedings of Indian National Science Academy. He served as a Member of the Executive Council of NASI and INSA (1998-2000).

Awards and Honours: Professor Muralidhar was conferred upon the Sadaksharawami Endowment Lectureship of SBC (1996); V Gopalakrishna Rao Endowment Lectureship for Osmania University (2004); US Srivastava Memorial Lectureship of NASI (2007); and Y Subbarao Memorial Lectureship of GGS Indraprastha University (2007). He is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
