Summary

B Sreenivasulu Setty graduated in Zoology from Sri Venkateswara University and postgraduated also in Zoology in 1961 from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He joined Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow in 1962 as CSIR Research Fellow, obtained PhD in 'reproductive biology' under the supervision of Dr AB Kar, worked there during his entire research career and retired as Senior Deputy Director and Head, Division of Endocrinology in 1996.

Academic and Research Achievements: Setty's pioneering contributions related to male reproduction and covered: physiology, biochemistry and molecular endocrinology of epididymis; and physiology and biochemistry of isolated germ cells of rat testis, Sertoli cells and epithelial cells of epididymis. His extensive studies on physiological significance of zinc in epididymal sperm maturation and biological significance of estrogen receptor in the male genital tract are well recognized. He was the first to suggest sperm plasma membrane as a potential site for fertility control at epididymal level. Another area of his major research interest was the development of steroidal and non-steroidal antispermatogenic agents. He evaluated in depth the potential of androgen antagonists as extragonadal antifertility agents. He played a significant role in the development of CONSAP, a new vaginal contraceptive cream incorporating plant saponins. He identified some potent synthetic spermicides which showed inherent anti-HIV activity in vitro. He guided 10 students for PhD and also authored over 125 research papers.

Other Contributions: Dr Setty was Research Coordinator of Antifertility Program in CDRI for over a decade. He was Principal Investigator of the CONRAD Program, an Indo-US collaborative project on the Development of Vaginal Contraceptives.

Awards and Honours: Dr Setty was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (1993).
