Hulikal Ramaiengar Krishnamurthy obtained his BSc (Hons) in Physics (1970) from Bangalore University and MSc (Physics) (1972) from IIT, Kanpur. He studied in Cornell University (1972-76) as an IBM Fellow working with Kenneth G Wilson and John W Wilkins. In his PhD thesis, he extended Wilson's numerical renormalization group solution for the Kondo problem to the symmetric Anderson impurity model. The extension to the asymmetric case was completed during his post-doctoral tenure (1976-78) at the University of Illinois. Krishnamurthy returned to India and joined the Department of Physics, IISc, Bangalore (1978) and became a Professor (1996). He has held sabbatical positions at Princeton University, Harvard University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, UC Davis and Georgetown University. He has been an Honorary Professor at JNCASR, Bangalore since 1998.

Academic and Research Achievements: Krishnamurthy is a condensed matter theorist of eminence especially in the area of strongly correlated electron systems. His research contributions include the discovery and analysis of novel scaling phenomena in hysteresis in model spin systems, an analysis of the instabilities of the Nagaoka ferromagnetic state of the large-U Hubbard model, development of an elegant mean-field theory of phase-transitions in the Bose-Hubbard model, development of the dynamical cluster approximation for embedding a causal self-consistent cluster in an effective medium, novel applications of dynamical mean-field theory, and a new theory for the colossal magneto-resistance and other hitherto poorly understood phenomena seen in doped manganites. He has published over a 100 research papers and mentored 12 PhD students.

Other Contributions: Krishnamurthy has contributed in important ways to the growth of the Physics department at IISc, especially of its condensed matter theory group and to the growth of condensed matter physics activity in India. Also noteworthy is his leadership role in science publishing in India as Editor (1998-2007) of Pramana, one of the India's best-rated Physics Journals.

Awards and Honours: Professor Krishnamurthy was awarded the INSA Young Scientist Medal (1983). He was awarded the DAE-Raja Ramanna Prize of JNCASR (2000), Alumni Award for Excellence in Research for Science by IISc, Bangalore (2006), and JC Bose National Fellowship of Government of India (2006). He was elected Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (1997).
