Summary

Adimurthi did his BSc and MSc in Mathematics from Bangalore University, earning gold medal for each. He joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai in 1972 and got his PhD from Bombay University on the theory of partical differential equations. He continued in TIFR, where he is presently Professor. His area of specialization is in semi-linear elliptic partial differential equations, hyperbolic conservation laws and numerical analysis.

Academic and Research Achievements: Adimurthi has taught undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and engineering at IISc and TIFR. He has taught topics from elementary calculus to advanced mathematics, including real analysis, measure and integration, linear and non-linear functional analysis, linear algebra and numerical analysis, probability theory. An important problem solved by Adimurthi relates to the existence in two dimensions of solutions of critical exponent problems, a major hurdle in PDEs because of its non-compact nature, especially in low dimensions. Adimurthi solved this problem completely in two dimensions which was an open problem raised by Brezis. In work with Professor Yadava, he investigated the problem with Neumann boundary conditions for about ten years and proved several conjectures. Later, he shifted to the study of Hamilton Jacobi problems and conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes. In joint work with Professor Gowda, he investigated this systematically and proved the existence and uniqueness of physically relevant solutions. Adimurthi has guided six PhD students and five Master's Theses.

Awards and Honours: Adimurthi is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad.
