Ajit Iqbal Singh (nee Ajit Kaur Chilana) earned her BA Hons (Mathematics) in 1963 and MA (Mathematics) (1965), both from Delhi University. After a brief stint as faculty at Indraprastha College, Delhi, she proceeded to University of Cambridge (1966) as a Commonwealth Scholar under the supervision of F Smithies and was awarded the PhD (1969). Soon after, she joined Hindu College, Delhi University and continued teaching in addition to doing research on functional analysis and harmonic analysis. She was appointed Reader in Mathematics, University of Delhi South Campus (1974) and rose to the position of Professor there (1984-2008). She held visiting positions at the University of Oregon at Eugene, Panjab University, Institute of Biomathematics and Biometry at GSF National Research Centre in Munich and University of Ohio at Athens. After superannuation from University of Delhi, she has been a Visiting Professor as INSA Senior Scientist (2008-2013) and as INSA Honorary Scientist (2013-2014) at the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi Centre. She is continuing her research work in quantum information theory as as INSA Honorary Scientist. Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Singh worked in the areas of linear operators in locally convex spaces, locally convex algebras, spectral synthesis on hypergroups, applications of harmonic analysis to differential equations and orthogonal polynomials, geometry of the range of a vector measure, quotient rings of algebras of functions and operators, involutions in Banach algebras related to group algebras, and quantum entanglement. She published 42 research papers in peer reviewed journals and supervised seven PhD and ten MPhil students. Other Contributions: Ajit Iqbal Singh has been an active member of many academic and administrative committees set up by the University of Delhi, DST, NCERT, UGC, CSIR, INSA, etc. She organized many academic activities and conferences. She has served the INSA Council. She was Associate Editor of Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics (2004-2011). Awards and Honours: Professor Ajit Iqbal Singh was awarded the Rai Bahadur Brij Mohan Lal Saheb Memorial Gold Medal , and the Ravi Kanta Devi Prize of the University of Delhi. She is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad in addition to that of the Indian National Science Academy. |
