Summary

Amitabha Ghosh received his BE (1962) and ME (1964) degrees from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur (Calcutta University). Subsequently he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department of this college as a Lecturer (1965), continued his doctoral research and obtained his DPhil degree (1969) from Calcutta University. He then joined IIT, Kanpur (1971) as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and became a Professor (1975). He was at the Technical University Aachen with Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship (1977-78). He served IIT, Kharagpur as Director (1997-2002) and subsequently returned to Kanpur where he continued till his retirement (2006).He was a Senior Scientist of INSA from 2007 to 2011. Currently he is a Platinum Jubilee Senior Scientist of the National Academy of Sciences, India since 2012.

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Ghosh started his research activities at BE College, and discovered a new tribological effect when magnetic fields are imposed on ferromagnetic bodies. He also discovered the means of enhancing vibration damping through introduced stress concentration. Ghosh, along with his students, was the first to discover the phenomenon of chaos in mechanical systems and conducted the first experiments on mechanical chaos in 1978. He proposed a new theory of inertial induction, leading to a number of profound cosmological and astrophysical consequences. Beside developing some new manufacturing processes utilizing the electrochemical discharge phenomenon and some new stationary and mobile robotic systems for the DAE, Ghosh also developed an innovative regenerative brake mechanism and stable drive system for cycle rickshaws. He also invented a number of new drive systems and mechanisms. Ghosh has published over 120 research papers and written five books in engineering and two books on Astronomy and Astrophysics. He has guided a number of Masters' students in the areas of Manufacturing Science and Mechanism & Machine Dynamics and produced 18 PhDs. Apart from writing a number of articles in Bengali he has published two Bengali novels also.

Other Contributions: Dr Ghosh was the Head of Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Kanpur and also the Principal Coordinator of the Quality Improve Programme of the MHRD. He initiated the first academic programme in Robotics in India (1984). The first Centre for Robotics was set up at IIT, Kanpur with him as the founder Head. At IIT, Kharagpur he started the first Master's programme in Medical Science and Technology for MBBS doctors in India, the Centre for Theoretical Studies and the School of Information Technology. He was the Indian Coordinator for the DST-JSPS programme on Advanced Manufacturing (1998-2005). He has been coordinating a major Indo-US Centre, funded by the Indo-US Science & Technology Forum, for collaborative research in advanced and futuristic manufacturing involving IIT, Kanpur, IIT, Kharagpur, CMERI Durgapur, IIEST Shibpur, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Northwestern University, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Missouri Columbia and University of California, Irvine. He was the Chairman of the Research Council of Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur from 2001 to 2013; Chairman of the CSIR Engineering Science Programme, the Chairman of the DST FIST programme for Engineering Sciences from 2001 to 2007 and the Chairman BOG of NITTTR Bhopal .

Awards and Honours: Professor Ghosh received the Calcutta University Gold Medal for standing first class first in the BE and ME examinations. He also received the Calcutta University A H Pandya endowment Gold Medal for standing first among all branches of engineering. He received Distinguished Teacher Award of IIT, Kanpur, National Design and Research Award as well as Engineering Personality Award by the Institution of Engineers (India), the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Manufacturing Design & Technology Research Conference, Prof Jai Krishna award for Research Excellence o Indian National Academy of Engineeringh, D Sc (h.c.) from Bengal Engineering and Science University, Distinguished Alumnus Award of Bengal Engineering and Science University and Institute Fellow Award from IIT Kanpur. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Indian National Academy of Engineering, New Delhi, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi,Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad. He was also made an Honorary Life Fellow of the Association of Mechanisms and Machines.
