Shrikant Mahadeo Bhatwadekar obtained his BSc degree in 1966 and MSc degree in 1968 from University of Poona and University of Bombay, respectively. After completing his Masters he joined the School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1968 as a Research Assistant. He obtained his PhD degree in 1975 from Bombay University under the supervision of Professor R Sridharan. He continued his research career in TIFR and at present he is a Senior Professor at the institute.

Academic and Research Achievements: After completing his doctoral works, which was mainly in the area of Noncommutative Algebra, Bhatwadekar turned his attention to research problems in Commutative Algebra. His major work lies in the areas of Projective Modules and Affine fibrations. His work which can be informally described as "Obstruction theory for projective modules" is highly praised by leading mathematicians working in the area. He has so far published around 50 research articles in reputed journals and has collaborated with many mathematicians in India and abroad. He has guided six students for PhD programme.

Awards and Honours: Dr Bhatwadekar is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
