Summary

Professor Gopal Krishna Dubey obtained his BE (1963), MTech (1965) and PhD (1972) degrees from Jabalpur University, Jabalpur. He served the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay (1966-77) and later joined as Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-Kanpur as Professor (1978-2002). He was Emeritus Professor at IIT-Kanpur during (2002-04). He also took up Visiting Professor/Fellow positions at University of Bradfort, UK (1974-75), University of British Columbia, Canada (1983-84) and National University of Singapore (1995).

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Dubey made original research contributions on synchronous link converters, switch mode rectifiers, ac-dc and dc-dc converters, and their applications in drivers and active power filters. Development of new control strategies, detailed investigation through simulation, design and fabrication and experimental investigation of synchronous link converter based VAR compensators, etc. were his valuable contribution in the emerging area of power quality conditioners. Unlike other approach with instantaneous compensation capability, his approach used a novel and simple scheme with great potential for use in industry. The switch mode rectifiers are intended to reduce harmonic pollution caused by conventional ac-dc converters. The evolution of improved topology and control methods of analysis and detailed theoretical and experimental investigations of fully controlled ac-dc converters, dc-dc converters, dc drives and ac drives has helped substantially in advancing knowledge in this area.

Other Contributions: Dr Dubey published one-hundred fifty research papers, wrote three books and edited one book and two special issues of Journal of Institution of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineers and Sadhana with international participation. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and honorary Editor of IETE Journal of Research.

Awards and Honours: Dr Dubey was a recipient of Bimal Bose Award of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) for excellence in Power Electronics (1990), Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Gold Medal (1976-77 and 1985-86), Tata Rao Gold Medal (1995-96) and Railway Board Medal (2001) of Institution of Engineers. He was the Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering.
