Arun M Jayannavar did his BSc (1976) from Govindram Seksaria Science College and MSc (1978) from Karnatak University, Dharwar. He got his PhD (1982) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore under the supervision of N Kumar and ESR Gopal. He was a Visiting Scientist at International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy (1983-84) and Humbold Fellow at the University of Ulm (1988-90). In 1991, he joined as a faculty at the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar.

Academic and Research Achievements: Jayannavar has made several original contributions in different interdisciplinary areas of condensed matter physics, notably on the problem of normal state c-axis resistivity in high temperature superconductors, mesoscopic systems, stochastic resonance and synchronization, thermal ratchets and molecular motors; heat pumps at nanoscales, Anderson localization; delay times, random lasers; giant diffusion; fluctuation theorems; etc. He has published more than 150 research papers and has guided five PhD students.

Other Contributions: Currently, Jayannavar is serving as an Editorial Board Member of the journals Current Science and Pramana.

Awards and Honours: Jayannavar is the recipient of the ICTP Prize in honour of Sir Nevill Mott in the field of Solid State Physics (1996), SS Bhatnagar Prize (1998) and GD Birla Award (2004). He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (2003) and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1996).
