Summary

Rohini Madhusudan Godbole obtained her BSc from Sir Parshurambhau College, University of Pune, MSc from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, and PhD (1979) in theoretical particle physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She was a Visiting Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai till 1982 and then at the University of Mumbai till 1994. She then moved to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where she is a Professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics.

Academic and Research Achievements: Godbole has worked extensively on different aspects of particle phenomenology. Her work regarding hadronic structure of high-energy photons outlined a variety of ways in which to study it. This work also had implications for the deisgn of next generation electron positron colliders, due to the possible large hadronic backgrounds. She has also suggested innovative ways to search for the top quark, Higgs bosons and other new particles at the high-energy colliders. She has published about 180 research papers and coauthored the book Sparticles and their Phenomenology. Professor Godbole has mentored a large number of young students at various levels including post-doctoral Fellows.

Other Contributions: Godbole is the Chair of the Indian Academy Panel for Women in Sciences. She has been actively involved in organizing research in High Energy Physics in India. She has been associated with the SERC Schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics for more than two decades. She is the Chief Editor of Pramana, a Journal of Physics and has been a Member of the Commission C11 on Particles and Fields of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). She is also a Member of the International Detector Advisory Group for the International Linear Collider (ILC). Dr Godbole is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Comittee to the Cabinet (SAC-C).

Awards and Honours: Godbole has been elected to the Fellowship of and She is a recipient of the Sheel Memorial Lecture Award of NASI, Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Visiting Fellowship of INSA (2005), Meghnad Saha Memorial Gold Medal of the Asiatic Society of Kolkata, Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and the Rustom Choksi Award of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; JC Bose Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology and Satyendranath Bose Medal of INSA (2009). She is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad
