Summary

Satyajit Mayor received his MSc in Chemistry from IIT, Mumbai. He obtained his PhD in Life Sciences from the Rockefeller University, New York, working on the biosynthesis of GPI-anchors in the African sleeping sickness parasite, Trypanosoma brucei, in the Laboratory of Molecular Parasitology, with Professor George Cross. He then moved to the Department of Pathology at Columbia University, New York, to study endocytic trafficking of lipids and proteins in Professor Frederick R Maxfield's laboratory. Mayor worked as a Lecturer at Woodshole Microscopy Course, Woodshole, Massachusetts, USA. Later he joined as a post-doctoral Fellow at the Columbia University (1991-95). In 1996, Satyajit Mayor moved to the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore. Presently he is the Director of National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and The Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), and Senior Professor in the area of cellular organization and signalling.

Academic and Research Achievements: While in Columbia University, Mayor developed tools to study the trafficking of GPI-anchored proteins in mammalian cells using quantitative fluorescence microscopy. At NCBS, he has taken a multi-disciplinary approach combining cell biology with physics and chemistry to study the organization and endocytic trafficking of transmembrane and lipid-anchored proteins in membranes of living cells. The trajectory of this work has led him to explore the fine structure of the plasma membrane on the one hand and, on the other hand, to utilize tools of molecular genetics for exploring the implications of these findings in the construction of endocytic pathways in cells, and the roles they may play in building the signaling gradients in tissues of Drosophila.

Others Contributions: Mayor helped in establishing state-of-the-art Microscopy Imaging Facilities as well as other platform technology centres at NCBS. He has been on the Editorial Board of several international journal including Cell, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Traffic and Molecular Biology of the Cell, etc.

Awards and Honours: Professor Mayor received  the Foreign Associate Award from US National Academy of Science (2015),  Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Mumbai(2013), Foreign Fellow, EMBO(2013), Infosys Prize in Life Sciences(2012), TWAS Prize in Biology(2010), EMBO Global Lecturer(2010), JC Bose Fellowship,  DST(2006-2011, 2012-2017), Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award(2003) and many other honors.
