Summary

Madan Mohan graduated from Hans Raj College, Delhi and obtained his MSc and PhD (1980) from the Department of Botany, University of Delhi. He did his post-doctoral work in molecular biology from the University of Toronto, Canada, (1983-86), and was awarded the Biotechnology Career Fellowship, Japan, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, USA (1994-96). He also graduated in law (LLB) from the University of Delhi (2008). Currently, he is the Dean (Research) at the University of Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Mohan taught botany in general, and plant molecular biology and genetics in particular. He along with his group mapped many insect resistant genes like GM2, GM4T, GM7 and GM8 in rice that confer resistance against different biotypes of the insect, gall midge. The marker assisted selection (MAS) technology was also developed, for the first time, for selection of resistant plants containing GM2, GM4T, GM7, and GM8 genes in rice. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay that distinguishes five different biotypes of rice gall midge was also developed. The products such as F8, F10 primers for detecting GM2 gene in rice; E20 primers for detecting GM4T gene in rice; SA 698, F8LB primers for detecting GM7 gene in rice; S09, Y13 primers for detecting biotype 1, 3, 4, 5 of gall midge, etc. have also been developed and transferred by him to national plant breeding research centers in the country. He has a patent that has been commercialized.

Other Contributions: Professor Mohan has been encouraging research not only in science but also in humanities, social sciences, arts and law. He has recently set up an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell and Patents Fund to facilitate the researchers, inventors and creators of novel work in commercialization of their IPRS and to help in publication of their findings. He has also sep up a "Centre for Genetically Modified Plants; Biosafety and Legal Issues" at the University of Delhi, South Campus.

Awards and Honours: Professor Mohan was Awarded Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award by ICAR (1996-98). He is a Fellow of National Academy of Agriculture Science, New Delhi (1999).
