Summary

Shiv Kumar Sarin obtained his MBBS with seven gold medals (1974), MD (General Medicine) (1978) from Rajasthan University and DM (Gastroenterology) (1981) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In 1983, he moved to GB Pant Hospital, Delhi University and became Head of Gastroenterology (1997) and continued there as Director & Professor of Gastroenterology. He was also Adjunct Professor in Molecular Medicine at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Sarin has special research interest in liver diseases to provide first rate clinical diagnosis and management. He brought several innovative techniques and treatment protocols in the country and even the world. He also published over 230 original articles in international/national journals, reviews, editorials and book chapters. Due to his vision and high quality scientific work, his department was sanctioned to be the first 'Advanced Center for Liver Diseases' in the country.

Other Contributions: Sarin was instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the 'Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS)' being set-up by the Government of Delhi. He helped to increase public awareness about hepatitis by initiating Hepatitis Awareness Day on 4th December in 1998. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Hepatology International covering liver diseases.

Awards and Honours: Dr Sarin was recipient of several awards, notably: Japanese Research Science Award (1986); Fogarty Fellowship by the National Institute of Health, USA (1988); Ranbaxy Research Science Award in Medical Sciences (1994); SS Bhatnagar Award (1996); Gifted Teacher Award by the Association of Physicians of India (1999); Drs Kunti & Om Prakash Oration Award (2004: Infectious Diseases) by ICMR; Netaji Oration by the Association of Physicians of India (2003); TWAS Award in Medical Sciences (2004); Dr VR Khanolkar Oration by National Academy of Medical Sciences (2004); Silver Jubilee Research Award by the Medical Council of India (2005); Dr Yellapragada Subba Row Memorial Award by INSA (2005); R&D in Life Sciences and Biotechnology Award (2005) by Federation of Indian Chambers and Industry; Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2005), and National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) (2005); Padma Bhushan (2007); and Eleventh Mahaveer Awards of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation for excellence in Human Endeavor in the field of Education & Medicine (2008). He was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad in 2003. He was President, Asian Pacific Association for Study of the Liver (APASL); Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG); and Indian Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL).
