Summary

Arvind Kumar Jain earned his BSc from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi and MSc from Lucknow University. He joined the Department of Geology and Geophysics (now Earth Sciences) at the University of Roorkee as a Junior Research Fellow of UGC to work under the supervision of RS Mithal and earned his PhD (1970). He was a UGC post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Roorkee (1970-71). After a brief stint at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehra Dun (then housed in Delhi University), he joined the University of Roorkee as Lecturer (1974) and served there till his retirement (2006). He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Karlsruhe between 1979 and 2001, and JSPS Fellow at the Hokaiddo University in 2004.

Crrently, he is an INSA Senior Scientist at the CBRI Roorkee.

Academic and Research Achievement: At the University of Roorkee, Jain initiated research on different aspects of Himalayan tectonics, and taught structural geology and plate tectonics. While at WIHG, he started research programmes in Arunachal and Sikkim Himalaya on regional stratigraphy, structural and tectonic relationships between lesser and higher Himalaya, which was then extended to Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal and Ladakh sectors. He carried out detailed investigations on deformation and strain patterns of the higher Himalayan metamorphic rocks, and their evolution within the ductile shear zone. A new model was proposed to explain the classic Himalayan inverted metamorphism by widely distributed ductile shear fabric, which became an internationally accepted mechanism. Jain has successfully applied the fission track dating technique in understanding the Himalayan tectonic exhumation in collaboration with the group at Kurukshetra University. He has published more than 95 research papers and co-authored a memoir on Himalayan Tectonics, besides editing two other volumes. He has mentored more than fifteen students for their PhD besides many MSc and MTech students.

Others Contributions: Jain had been responsible for establishing National Facilities on the Electron Probe Micro Analyzer and the Geochronology/Isotope Geology at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. He had been member of various committees of UPSC, Universities and National Institutions as well as of Governing Bodies of WIHG and Research Council of NGRI, Hyderabad.
