Summary

Lahiri Majumder obtained his BSc (Hons) in Botany (1966) from Presidency College, Kolkata, MSc (Botany) (1968) from University College of Science, Calcutta University, PhD (1973) from Calcutta University working at the Bose Institute under the supervision of Professor BB Biswas and DSc in Biochemistry (1985) also from Calcutta University. He did his post-doctoral research as Visiting Fellow/Associate at the National Institutes of Health, USA (1973-77). He held the positions of a Lecturer, Reader, Professor and Chairman at the Department of Botany, School of Life Sciences, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan (1977-91); Professor of Botany, Bose Institute, Kolkata (1991-2005) and as  Senior Professor & Head, Plant Molecular and Cellular Genetics/Division of Plant Biology  Bose Institute between 2005 -2011. He also worked at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, USA (1979,1980,1982); University of Ohio, USA (sabbatical, 1986-88); University of Arizona, USA (1994,1996,1998,1999); and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA (2000,2002,2005). He was Fogarty International Center Visiting Fellow/Associate, NIH, USA (1973-76). He was a Raja Ramanna Fellow (DAE) between 2011-2016. He is currently an INSA Senior Scientist ( since March, 2016)

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Academic and Research Achievements: Lahiri Majumder taught plant physiology and biochemistry and plant molecular and cellular biology at the Visva Bharati University, Bose Institute and Calcutta University. Major contribution of Professor Majumder is in the field of myo-inositol metabolism in plants and other organisms encompassing the biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and its evolutionary aspects. Through discovery of the phosphoinositol kinase and its regulatory inhibitor protein, he worked out the phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate) biosynthesis pathway in legume seeds, postulating the novel \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"inositol phosphate cycle\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" operative in plants. Genetic studies on the structural gene (Ino1) of the inositol synthase (MIPS) in yeast was later followed by cloning and identification of the Ino1 gene(s) from higher plants, parasites and cyanobacteria. He identified the genes for the entire inositol biosynthetic pathway in Synechocystis through combined bioinformatic, biochemical and molecular studies. His studies on the diversification and evolution of the Ino1 gene established the antiquity of the MIPS protein across phyla. Further, identification of a unique salt-tolerant MIPS protein and its gene PcIno1 from the wild rice, Porteresia coarctata , established the potential for raising salt-tolerant transgenic crop plants through its introgression. His group  has identified the first ever monocot gene for the inositol methyl transferase (PcImt1) from Porteresia and made transgenic salt-tolerant rice plants by introgression of the PcIno1 and PcImt1 gene . A salt-tolerant chloroplastic Fructose-1,6 bisphosphatase gene has also been isolated and introgressed in rice conferring a salt-tolerant phenotype. He has mentored 23 PhD students and  20 post-doctoral Fellows/Associates/DST Young Scientists and BioCare Scientist.
