Summary

Chinmoy Sankar Dey earned his BSc and MSc degrees from Calcutta University. He then joined the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata as a fellow and obtained the PhD degree from Jadavpur University, working on biochemical regulation of sperm motility. Dr Dey worked as a post-doctoral fellow in USA (1988-93), first at the California Institute of Technology and then at the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas on eukaryotic signal transduction. He was a Pool Officer (1994) at the National Institute of Immunology after returning to India and then joined the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Punjab, as an Assistant Professor and became a Professor and Head by the year 2002 and 2004, respectively. During April 2010 Prof. Dey has joined the Scool of Biological Sciences at IIT-Delhi.

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Dey's research interests are insulin resistant diabetes and Leishmanial drug resistance. He has generated a unique molecular target-based insulin resistant skeletal muscle cells. The technology has been granted a US patent. Dr Dey has identified focal adhesion kinase and p38 MAP kinase as possible drug targets against insulin resistance using the model in combination with biochemical and gene silencing technologies. He has also identified topoisomerase II as a possible target against Leishmania. By utilizing proteomics Dr Dey has proposed eukaryotic initiation factor 4A as a possible target against Miltefosine resistant Leishmania. His laboratory is one of the first to propose apoptosis-like death in protozoan parasites. He has 64 research papers, six reviews, two book chapters, one US patent to his credit. Currently Prof. Dey is trying to understand insulin resistance in the neuronal cells. He has been regularly teaching Cell biology, Molecular biology, Signal transduction to the MSc and PhD students. He has guided twelve Master's theses and ten PhD theses.

Other Contributions: Dr Dey had served as the Regional Associate Editor of Journal of Biopharmaceutics and Biotechnology, USA, and currently an Editorial Board member of Open Parasitology Journal (Bentham Publisher).

Awards and Honours : Professor Dey was awarded SS Bhatnagar Award (2003) from CSIR, New Delhi, National Bioscience Award (2003) from Department of Biotechnology, OPPI-Scientist Award in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (2005) and CDRI Award (2008). He was elected as the Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (2007). He is an elected member of Guha Research Conference.
