Summary

Subrata Sinha obtained MBBS and MD (Biochemistry) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. His postgraduate research was under the guidance of Professors GP Talwar and LM Srivastava availing the ICMR Talent Search Scheme Fellowship. He did his PhD and postdoctoral training under the guidance of Dr GE Neal and Dr TA Cannors at the MRC Toxicology Unit, Cashalton, UK and Professor CJ Marshall at the Chester Beauty Institute for Cancer Research, London. He worked on the mechanism of oncogene activation in aflatoxin induced liver cancer. On returning from England, he joined the National Institute of Immunology as TSS Fellow. Since 1988, he is working as Faculty Member, Biochemistry Department, AIIMS, and heading it (2003- ).

Academic and Research Achievements: Sinha has developed a multi-disciplinary collaborative research programme at AIIMS on the genetics of glioma. He has identified a tumour suppressor locus that is altered in high grade human glial tumours, and is also linked to highly proliferative tumours, within a particular tumour grade. He has also shown the possibility of different chemotherapeutic strategies that are more effective in p53 mutated tumours as compared to those with a wild type p53, and vice versa and was able to demonstrate the validity of the mutator hypothesis in primary human glial tumours. His another area of interest relates to recombinant antibody technology where his laboratory has generated human as well as humanized antibodies to the oncofetal antigen, the placental isozyme of alkaline phosphatase and to the Hepatitis B surface antigen. He has also guided 10 PhD students.

Other Contributions: Sinha has served on several Scientific Advisory committees of DBT and ICMR institutes, Project Review committees of national scientific bodies and the Boards of Studies of several university schools and departments. He has chaired the committee of the Medical Council of India for Modernizing the Biochemistry Curriculum. He has been active in introducing molecular medicine and research exposure in the MBBS curriculum He is also serving in Technical committees to set up the six AIIMS like institutions. He is also a Member of the Guha Research Conference.

Awards and Honours: Professor Sinha was awarded Swarnajayanti Fellowship by DST (1998). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
