Summary

Brindaban Chandra Ranu received his BSc (Hons) (Chemistry) and MSc (Chemistry), both from Calcutta University, and his PhD from Jadavpur University working under the guidance of UR Ghatak. He did his postdoctoral work (1982-85) in Virginia Tech, with T Hudlicky. Ranu started his career as Lecturer at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata where he became Professor in 1996, Head of the Department (2003-08) and Senior Professor in 2005. He was Visiting Professor at the University of Extremadura, (1995-96)..

Academic and Research Achievements : Ranu\'s work primarily focused on green chemistry. His research on green synthesis using ionic liquid and indium-mediated reactions stimulated much interest. He also initiated a research program on the use of metal nanoparticles as green catalysts which have great potential for industrial applications. Till today he published 195 papers in highly reputed international journals, and authored several invited reviews for various journals including Tetrahedron, Synlett, Organic Preparations and Procedures International, European Journal of Organic Chemistry and chapters in books such as Encyclopedia for Reagents in Organic Synthesis (John Wiley, USA) and Eco-friendly Processes and Procedures for the Synthesis of Fine Chemicals (Royal Society of Chemistry, London). He also mentored 20 PhD students. .

Other Contributions: Ranu has been Member of the Editorial Board of Indian Journal of Chemistry, Section B. He served as Council Member in Chemical Research Society of India and National Organic Symposium Trust for two terms and is a member of the Green Chemistry Task Force of the DST. .

Awards and Honours: Professor Ranu received the NS Narasimhan Award from Pune University (1993) and the Chemical Research Society of India Bronze Medal (2001), selected for Silver Medal (2010). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1995). He received JC Bose National Fellowship (DST) in 2009.
