Summary

Hormazad Maneck Antia earned his BSc degree (1973) from Indore University (now Devi Ahilya University) and MSc (1975) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, after which he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai where he worked on solar oscillations under the supervision of SM Chitre to obtain his PhD (1979). He was a post-doctoral Fellow at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy (1980). He has been working on helioseismology at TIFR.

Academic and Research Achievements: Antia has been mainly working on problems related to convection and oscillations in the sun and other stars. With the availability of accurately measured frequencies of solar oscillations during the last  two decades, the emphasis of his work has shifted to helioseismology, or studying the internal structure and dynamics of the sun using these frequencies. He has been actively involved with the Global Oscillates Network Group (GONG) project that includes one station at the Udaipur Solar Observatory and managed by the National Solar Observatory, Tucson. Extensive inversion techniques were developed by him to infer the sound speed, density, temperature and chemical composition inside the sun from the observed frequencies. These have been used to test physical input to the theoretical solar models, like the equation of state, opacities, nuclear reaction rates as well as for determining the abundance of helium and heavy elements. He has studied in detail the solar cycle variations in structure and rotation rate with over 17 years of helioseismic data. Dr Antia has published about 100 research articles in various journals and written a book entitled Numerical Methods for Scientists and Engineers.

Awards and Honours: Antia received the Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Award in Space Science (1999) and was elected to the Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1999).
