Summary

Gadadhar Misra obtained his BSc (1977) from Utkal University, MSc (1979) in Mathematics from Sambalpur University and PhD (1982) from Suny, Stony Brook. He was Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, (1982-84); at the University of California, Irvine, (1984-85); and at the Indian Statistical Institute (1986-89). He became Associate Professor (1989-93) and then Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore (1993-2007). He joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as a Professor (2007).

Academic and Research Achievements: In his joint work with Clark, he has found (a) counter examples to an important conjecture on similarity of operators in the Cowen and Douglas class (b) given an explicit description of the class of completely non-unitary contractions whose characteristic function is constant. He obtained a canonical model as well as complete invariants for a class of quotient Hilbert modules, and introduced the notion of quasi-free Hilbert modules to generalize parts of the Sz-Nagy-Foias Model theory in the context of multi-variate operator theory in his joint work with Douglas. He has obtained a classification of scalar homogeneous shifts and also calculated the joint Taylor spectrum of a class of multiplication operators on the "twisted" Bergman space jointly with Bagchi.  In his joint work with Koranyi, a complete classification of all irreducible homogeneous operators in the Cowen-Douglas class has been obtained.

Other Contributions: Misra was the Head, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Centre (1997-2002). He was the Editor of the journal Proceedings (Math Sci) Indian Academy Science from 2005 - 2012. He is the Editor of the Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics from 2015.

Awards and Honours: Professor Misra is a recipient of SS Bhatnagar Prize (2002). He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1999).
