Mewa Singh did his Masters in Psychology from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He joined Meerut University to work with Professor SD Singh where he developed interest in wildlife and primates. He obtained PhD (Psychopharmacology) from University of Mysore and also got training in Wildlife Management and Conservation from Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. He has been teaching at University of Mysore since 1977. He was a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Bucknell University, USA; Summer Academy Teacher at Studienstiftung in Germany; and Summer Academy Teacher at Russian Academy of Science, Moscow. \ \Academic and Research Achievements: Mewa Singh\\\\\\'s behavioural, demographic and ecological studies on many hitherto poorly understood Indian mammalian species have helped bridge the gap between behavioural and conservation biology. His research has led to enhanced understanding of ontogeny of social behaviour, resource partitioning strategies, and impacts of habitats and their alteration on behaviour, demography, life-history and ecology. He has illustrated the spatial patterns of distribution of wild mammals in ecological time scales. At academic level, his research has contributed to the understanding of ecology and evolution of animal behaviour. At applied level, his research helps to develop better strategies for conservation and management of endangered species. He has virtually introduced the solitary and nocturnal primate, the slender loris, to the word of ecological and behavioural sciences. He is an internationally acclaimed expert on the most endangered species of macaques, the lion-tailed macaque of the Western Ghats. \ \Other Contributions: Mewa Singh has been on Editorial boards of leading international journals on Primatology and Behaviour, and is Co-editor of an authoritative Cambridge University Press book on Macaque Societies. He has trained a generation of research students, both Indian and foreign, who have excelled in research in animal behaviour. \ \Awards and Honours: Professor Mewa Singh was awarded Golden Jubilee Science Award by the University of Mysore. He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, The National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad; Ramanna Fellow, J.C. Bose Fellow; SERB Distinguished Fellow. He was also awarded Sunder Lal Hora Medal in 2017 by INSA. \ |
