On completion of his B.Sc. degree from Agra University in 1966, Gopal Krishna joined the Atomic Energy Training School and thereafter in 1967 he joined the newly established Radio Astronomy Group at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) as an aca- demic staff member (Research Associate). He did his PhD work under the supervision of Prof. Govind Swarup, using the newly built Ooty Radio Telescope and obtained his PhD (1977) from the Bombay University. During 1978-80 he went for post-doctoral studies to the Max-Planck-Institut f. Radioastronomie (MPIfR, Bonn), as a Fellow of the Alexander von-Humboldt Foundation. In later years, he made sabbatical visits to the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI, Baltimore), European Southern Observatory (ESO, Santiago) and MPIfR (Bonn). Since 2002, he is a 'Senior Professor' at the National Centre for Radio As- trophysics (NCRA, Pune), an autonomous Centre of TIFR, which is responsible for building and operation of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) near Pune.

Academic and Research Achievements: The focus of his research continues to be on theoretical and observational aspects of radio galaxies and quasars. Major issues where his work has provided initial trigger, or key insights include aging of radio galaxies and their relic phase, their early stages (called Gegahertz- Peaked-Spectrum and Compact-Steep-Spectrum sources), their striking morphological di- chotomy, the bulk speed and composition of their jets and brightness variations, their unifi- cation theories, as well as their temporal and cosmological evolution. He has published over 140 papers in refereed international journals, including 8 in Nature and 20 Letters in other leading journals. He has supervised 3 PhD projects.

Other Contributions: He was nominated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as the sole Indian representative on the 16-member 'International Advisory Committee' for the "Year of Astronomy" (2009). He also chaired the closing session of the UNESCO Inaugural Ceremony of the "Year of Astronomy" held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in Jan., 2009. He has also served as Vice President of the Astronomical Society of India.

Awards and Honours: In 1993 he received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize (Physics). He is Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, The National Academy of Sciences, India and The Indian Academy of Sciences.
