Kalasa Chandrasekhar Jois Kumara Swamy did his BSc and MSc from the University of Mysore. Then he joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for his Ph.D. under the joint supervision of Prof. S.S. Krishnamurthy and Prof. A. R. Vasudeva Murthy. After completing his Ph.D. (1984), he worked in the same department as a Research Associate and then as a Senior Scientific Officer in a project. He did his post-doctoral work with Prof. Robert R. Holmes at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) during the years1986-89. He then joined the University of Hyderabad as a faculty member, became a Professor in the year 2001 and is continuing in this position. He is an AvH fellow (Saarbrücken, Germany with Prof. Dr. Michael Veith). Academic and Research Achievements:Kumara Swamy and his research group have made original, novel and innovative contributions to Phosphorus Chemistry at the interface between traditional Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. He has shown that the commonly accepted tenets for the site preferences in the chemically and biochemically important pentacoordinate phosphorus compounds do not hold for several commonly encountered systems. First time structural characterization of novel cyclophosphazane-macrocycles, as a lead to further research activity, was accomplished by his group. Establishing the identity of many of the proposed ‘intermediates’ in the synthetically useful Mitsunobu reaction is another achievement from his group. His current work involves the use of allenylphosphonates (phosphorylated allenes) in the palladium-catalyzed/organocatalytic synthesis of phosphono-benzofurans, -isocoumarins, pyrazoles, coumarins etc. He has over 140 publications and has mentored over 16 PhD students so far.
