After doing postdoctoral work in Carnegie-Mellon University in the USA and Edinburgh University in the UK, he joined the Indian Institute of Science in 1988 where he is now Professor.

Diptiman Sen's research interests lie in condensed matter systems in low dimensions, mesoscopic systems, and various aspects of quantum field theory. He has worked in the areas of exactly solvable models, quantum spin systems, electrical transport in quantum wires, fractional statistics, quantum Hall systems, and the effects of quenching systems across quantum critical points.

Diptiman Sen is a Fellow of all the three Science Academies of India and is currently a recipient of the J. C. Bose Fellowship given by DST. Apart from doing research, he enjoys teaching physics at all levels. In 2007, he was awarded the Jaya Jayant Award for Excellence in Teaching for Science by the Indian Institute of Science.
