Summary

Talat Ahmad completed his M. Phil and Ph. D in Petrology and Geochemistry from the School of Environmental Sciences, JNU, New Delhi. He joined Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun as Scientist then he moved to University of Delhi as Professor of Geology. He is presently Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir, Srinagar since 1st June 2010.
 
Academic and Research Achievements: Ahmad worked extensively in the Himalayas to understand the genesis of the Precambrian magmatism and the crustal evolution processes in the Himalayas and the northern Indian shield. He established a Precambrian Research Group which helped the Department of Geology, University of Delhi to become Centre of Advanced Studies with Precambrian studied as a thrust area. AS VC Kashmir University he signed MOU with Delhi University, JNU, Sikkim University and Jammu University to form a consortium to Study the Himalayan Glaciers. He is now starting new courses on Disaster Management, Atmospheric Sciences and Mountain Meteorology.
 
Other Contributions: Talat Ahmad has long term collaboration with scientists from UK, USA, Australia, Poland, Finland and Russia and has contributed significantly in terms of generating geochronological and geochemical data under collaborative studies and brought important similarities with the Precambrian sequences from most of these countries. He got involved as Regional Coordinator for IGCP – 516 and an active participant of IGCP -599. He organised and participated in the Inspire Programme to popularise science amongst young students of J& K. Supervised nine Ph. D thesis.
