Summary

Debashish Chowdhury obtained his MSc (Physics, 1980) from IIT, Kharagpur and Ph.D. (Physics, 1984) from IIT Kanpur. After his post-doctoral research in Germany and USA, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1987 as an Assistant Professor. He joined the faculty of IIT Kanpur in 1992 and became Professor in 1997. At present, he is Dr. Jag Mohan Garg Chair professor in the Physics  Department of IIT, Kanpur. He has also held various visiting positions in Germany, Canada and USA.

Academic and Research Achievements: Debashish Chowdhury has worked on several interdisciplinary topics using the methods of statistical physics. He did pioneering research on the nature of ordering and magneto-transport in spin glass alloys. He authored a popular monograph on spin glasses, which was published by Princeton University Press in the prestigious Princeton series in physics. He established the consequences of singular dynamic scaling in strongly disordered magnets. Chowdhury demonstrated the formation of novel micellar aggregates,  including a necklace-like super-aggregate in a mixture of single-chain and dimeric (gemini) surfactants. He developed novel quantitative methods for vehicular traffic and other traffic-like  collective phenomena. At IIT Kanpur, he  initiated teaching and research in theoretical Biological  Physics. Since 2005, Professor Chowdhury has been working on the operational  mechanisms of natural nano-machines in living cells, particularly their  stochastic mechano-chemical kinetics.

Other Contributions: Professor Chowdhury has served as a member of the Editorial Board of  European Physical Journal B.

Awards and Honors: Debashish Chowdhury has been an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Koln, Germany, and an Associate of the ICTP, Trieste. He is a recipient of the Award: INSA Medal for Young Scientists (1989). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (2004), and National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad (2008).
