Dr. Suresh Das obtained his Ph. D. in Chemistry in 1981 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, U.K. Subsequently, he gained postdoctoral research experience at the Max Planck Institüt für Strahlenchemié, Germany (1981-1984), Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, USA (1984-1985) and the University of Houston, USA (1985-1988). After a short stay as a Visiting Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, he joined as Head of the newly established Photochemistry Research Unit in 1989, at the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Trivandrum. He is currently the Director of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (formerly RRL,Trivandrum). Academic and Research Achievements: Dr. Das has been working in the area of Photosciences and Photonics, where his significant contributions have been in the design and study of novel photoresponsive materials with potential applications in imaging, solar energy conversion and photobiology. His fundamental studies in this area have led to a detailed understanding of the structure property relationships in such materials. This has resulted in the development and utilization of several novel photo-functional materials such as photoresponsive liquid crystals, luminescent materials and near infra red absorbing dyes in a variety of applications. Other Contributions: Dr. Das has been the Convener of International Symposia on Photochemical Sciences organized in Trivandrum by the Photosciences and Photonics Division of NIIST in 1998, 2001 and 2004. He was the Chairman of the 14’th National Symposiuim in Chemistry of the Chemistry Research Society of India, 2012 held at NIIST, Trivandrum. He was one of the founding Council Members of the Asian and Oceanian Photochemical Society and is a Vice-President of the Materials Research Society of India. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Photochemistry Photobiology. A: Chemistry (Elsevier) and Langmuir (ACS). Awards and Honours: Dr. Das is aFellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (2005). He was awarded the Silver Medal, Chemical Research Society of India (2009), the Bronze Medal, Chemical Research Society of India (2000) and the Materials Research Society of India Medal (2007). He delivered the A. V. Rama Rao Prize Lecture, JNCASR, Bangalore in 2008.He has been a Visiting Scientist at the Max Plank Institüt für Biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen, Germany (1999 and 2000), Radiation Laboratory, University of Notre Dame, USA (1998 – 1999) and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Tsukuba, Japan. |
