Summary

Sreebrata Goswami earned his BSc and MSc degrees from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. In 1979, he joined the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata as a Ph. D. student to work in the research school of Professor Animesh Chakravorty and obtained his PhD degree in1983. After his PhD he joined as a faculty at North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, in 1985. In 1995, he moved to Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science as a faculty.

Academic and Research: In 1985, Goswami joined the Department of Chemistry at North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, as lecturer. Later, he moved to Kolkata to the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science where he is now a Senior Professor and Dean (Academic). He has played a key role in building a tradition of high-class research and teaching in modern inorganic chemistry. His research is interdisciplinary and covers several aspects of transition metal chemistry involving redox non-innocent ligands, metal-mediated organic transformations, synthesis of functional azoaromatic compounds and search for their applications. The impact of this activity is widely felt in d-block element chemistry spanning phenomena such as transition metal mediated multiple ortho C-N bond formation reactions in aniline, design and synthesis of new redox non-innocent azoaromatic ligands, their transition metal complexes and exploration of their applications as catalyst and functional materials. Goswami has published over 100 original research papers in highly reputed journals. Sixteen students have received PhD degrees under his guidance.

Additional Information: He is an elected Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, 2004 and recipient of (i) Bronze medal, Chemical Research Society of India, 2002, (ii) International Authors’ Award, Royal Society of Chemistry, 1999, (iii) Career Award, University Grants Commission, 1994. Goswami has been in the Editorial Advisory Boards of Indian Journal of Chemistry Sec-A.
