Sulabha Kashinath Kulkarni obtained her BSc (1969), M. Sc.(1971) and Ph. D. (1976) from the University of Pune. During 1976-77 she was a post-doctoral fellow in the Physics Department (E20) at Technical University, Munich, Germany and carried out research on some gas/solid interactions using a variety of surface science techniques. After returning back to India in 1977 she joined Physics Department, University of Pune as a faculty member. In 1988 she joined UGC research scientist post and continued research and teaching in the Physics Department, University of Pune till 2009. In 2009 she joined Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune and continued as a UGC Scientist. From time to time she was a visiting scientist at many institutes like Fritz Haber Institute der Max Planck Gesselschaft, Berlin, University of Wuerzburg, Germany, Tokyo University, Kyoto University, Japan, Chonbuk National University, Korea, FEMTO-ST, Besancon, France etc. Academic and Research Achievements: Sulabha Kulkarni has made significant contributions in the field of Nanoscience, Materials Science and Surface Science. Her work on nanomaterials, hard coatings and high strength aerogels is noteworthy. She also carried out extensive work on Photoelectron Diffraction as well as Photoelectron Spectroscopy of surfaces and interfaces. . She has supervised 32 Ph. D. students. She has played a major role in the programs of National interests like IUC-DAEF (now UGC-DAE-CSR) Photoelectron Spectroscopy beam line design commissioned at INDUS-I, RRCAT Indore She was involved in the development of monochromators for Neutron Beam line by IUC-DAEF, Mumbai, installed at Dhruva reactor, BARC, Mumbai. She has written a book on nanoscience and three popular science books in Marathi (one co-authored) and one popular book in English. She is the co-author of ‘Laboratory Manual in Solid State Physics Experiments’ for undergraduate students and teachers. She also participated in the laboratory kits development under UGC ULP Program. She has contributed an essay in Leelavati’s Daughters’, a book published by Indian Academy of Science. During 1994-98 she was the Executive Editor and the Joint Editor from 2002-4 for ‘Physics Education’ journal. She is associate editor for the Journal of Nanophotonics (2011-) and International Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2006-) . She often writes popular science articles in local Newspapers and has given several technical/semi-popular lectures in colleges, schools, various institutes, in public and radio talks. She has served on several national committees as a member and DST Women Scientists (WOS-A) as a chairperson. Awards and Honours : Sulabha Kulkarni has received Maharashtra State Award for Book Writing (2009), Bharatiya Stree Shakti ‘Women and Technological Innovation National Award’ (2007), ‘Lokshikshan Puraskar’ Vidya Mahamandal (2007), Pune and MRSI Medal (2005). She is also a Fellow of Indian Academy of Science (2004), Fellow of National Academy Of Science (2003) and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences (1995). |
