Summary

Professor Anil K. Gupta had his graduate and post graduate education from Aligarh Muslim University and Banaras Hindu University, respectively. He was awarded Ph.D. in 1987 and joined Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur as a faculty in the same year. Prof. Gupta was a Post-doctoral fellow at Louisiana State University (1990-1991), Senior JSPS Fellow at Shimane University, Japan (1999) and NRC Senior Research Scientist at NOAA, USA (2001). He was the Director of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun - an autonomous Institution of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, for 7 years from 2010-17.

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Gupta has made significant contributions in the field of Micropaleontology, Paleoclimatology and Paleoceanography with special reference to the Indian monsoon. He has edited a special volume of Palaeo3 (Elsevier) on themes related to the Indian monsoon and published an Inventory of Glacial Lakes in Uttarakhand. He has published over 120 papers in journals of high impact that comprise his 5 papers in Nature, Science, Nature Geoscience and Scientific Reports, 2 papers in Geology, 4 papers in Geophysical Research Letters and 13 papers in Palaeo3. Prof. Gupta has a long research and teaching experience and has extensively worked on benthic and planktic foraminifera from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) cores to unravel history of past Indian monsoon variability as well as oceanic changes in the Indian Ocean. He has made fundamental and outstanding contributions to the understanding of past behaviour of the Indian monsoon system and ocean circulation at time scales ranging from decadal to millennial and orbital. His outstanding contributions include documentation of Bond cycles in the past record of the Indian monsoon during the Holocene, and first documentation of the Indian Ocean Dipole in a paleo record. Prof. Gupta has recently initiated new research programs on lake deposits and cave carbonates (speleothems) from the Himalaya to understand precipitation changes in the region. He has the credit of publishing for the first time the longest speleothem record from India recording significant changes in the Indian monsoon strength. He has developed laboratories of International standards at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur with facilities to carry out high resolution paleomonsoonal research using marine sediments. Prof. Gupta has significantly contributed to the Education and Outreach and guided 17 Ph.D. students.

Other Contributions: Prof. Gupta has served as a member on several National committees of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Department of Science and Technology and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He has also served as member of the National Committee of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP).

Awards and Honours: Prof. Gupta is the recipient of National Mineral Award (2000), T.M. Harris medal from Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleobotany (2004), and Dr. J. Coggin Brown Memorial (Gold) Medal for Geological Sciences by the MGMI (2005-2006). He is also recipient of the coveted TWAS Prize 2010 from The World Academy of Sciences. He is the Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. Prof. Gupta is also Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) - academy of sciences for the developing world. He was also elected as Vice President of the Indian Geophysical Union from 2011-2013. Prof. Gupta received the prestigious J.C. Bose National Fellowship of DST, New Delhi.
