Summary

Parthasarathi Mitra earned his B.Sc. and M. Sc. degrees in Physics from the University of Calcutta. He carried out research in quantum field theory under the guidance of Probir Roy at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and was awarded a Ph.D. degree by Bombay University. After postdoctoral studies in Germany and Canada, he returned to the country and after a few years joined the faculty at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Calcutta.

Research: While Mitra has lectured on quantum mechanics and general relativity to students at various levels, his main activity has been research in quantum field theory and quantum gravity. He has worked on two dimensional field theories, lattice fermions, anomalies, anomalous gauge theories and black holes. He has been involved in a new look at global anomalies and the strong CP problem. He has carried out  calculations of black hole entropy in different approaches. Special mention may be made of the work on extremal black hole entropy where the functional integral has to be summed over different topologies and his clarification of black hole boundary conditions in the study of Hawking radiation.

Honours: He is also a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India
