Summary

Upadrasta Ramamurty obtained BE (1989) from Andhra University and ME (1991) from Indian Institute of Science, both with Metallurgy as specialization and in I Rank, and obtained PhD (1994) from Brown University under the guidance of Professor S. Suresh. He worked as a Post-doc. at University of California-Santa Barbara (Aug. 1994-Sep. 1996) and M.I.T. (October 1996- September 1997). Subsequently, he worked as an Assistant Professor for three years at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, before returning to India to join IISc in October 2000. He became a full professor there in January 2010. Ramamurty also holds an Honorary Professor position at the International Centre for Materials Science, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research. He has been a Faculty Fellow in the Advanced Materials Program, Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) and held visiting appointments at M.I.T. (USA), Cambridge University (UK), African University of Science and Technology (Nigeria), Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (Switzerland), Ruhr University Bochum (Germany), University de Rennes (France), Hahn-Meitner-Institute (Germany) and ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company.

Academic and Research Achievements: Ramamurty?s work, over years covered a wide spectrum of materials and issues within the broad framework of mechanical properties. Through experimental and modeling contributions in each of the diverse material systems and issues, he has established himself as one of the world leaders in the area of mechanical behavior of materials. In particular, he made breakthrough scientific contributions for the understanding of the mechanical behavior of metallic glasses, foams, and alloys as well as nanocomposites. He cleverly exploited experimental techniques such as the bonded interface technique to new insights on how materials deform and fail (fracture and fatigue), which also has significant technological importance as they enable us to design high performance materials. Some of his significant contributions are: the identification of the governing fracture criterion in metallic glasses, studying the fatigue performance of Ti alloys and shape memory alloys. He was also the first one to examine the variability in the mechanical properties of a closed-cell Al foam and connect that to the ?micro?structural variability. More recently, he has been examining the mechanical properties of organic crystals and organic-inorganic framework structured crystals establishing the linkages between the molecular structure and the mechanical properties.

Awards and Honours: Ramamurty was conferred A. A. Krishnan Medal (Highest GPA in the M. E. Class of '91), K. P. Abraham Medal (Best M.E. Project), both at IISc, and a University Fellowship for Brown University. He is a recipient of the Scopus Young Scientist award (2007), Swarnajayanthi Fellowship of the Department of Science and Technology (2008), Metallurgist of the Year award of Indian Institute of Metals and Ministry of Steels, (2008), and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2011). He was elected to the Fellowship of the Indian National Science Academy (2012), the Indian Academy of Sciences (2010), and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2010).

Other Contributions: Prof. Ramamurty was Chairman, Indian Organizing Committee of the Fourth Indo-American Frontiers of Engineering (IAFOE) Symposium held at Bethesda, USA during March 2012. This is a biennial flagship program of the Indo-US S&T Forum (IUSSTF) organized in partnership with the National Academy of Engineering, USA.

He was a Member of:

1) International Organizing Committee, International Indentation Workshop series.
2) Scientific Advisory Board, International Conference on Porous Metals and Metallic Foams, Scientific Committee.
3) International Workshop on Flow and Fracture of Advanced Glasses.
