Summary

Dr. Deepak Chandra Srivastava has had a distinguished record of educational career all through in distinction, including B. Sc. (Hons)., M.Sc., and M. Phil in 1975, 1977 and 1979, respectively, both in First rank and First division from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. By virtue of having obtained First rank in M.Sc., he received ISM Medal and Sir Henry Hayden Medal from Mining Metallurgical and Geological Society of India. Having completed his Ph.D. course of studies in his alma mater in 1982, he started his career as Lecturer at the Dept. of Earth Sciences, University of Roorkee (Now IIT Roorkee), and rose to the position of Professor in June, 2001 in the same department. He is also a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Banglore and that of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and, a winner of National Mineral Award.

His pioneering research contributions comprise experimentation with fluid inclusions to trace the fluid evolutionary history during sequential crack propagation and large-scale folding and determination of the P-T conditions during brittle-ductile shearing and brittle faulting. In the research pursuits after Ph.D. in Singhbhum Craton, he advanced research efforts to the study of the basement rocks of the Bundelkhand craton and those of the Kumaun Lesser Himalaya.       Dr. Srivastava’s numerical and Computer-graphics techniques have opened up new dimensions to paleostress and paleostrain analyses. He has evolved several new methods of strain estimation that are easy-to-use, besides being rapid and more accurate than other available methods. One of his novel innovations, the strain estimation from distorted fossils, cuts across the interface of structural geology and paleontology. Similarly, his contributions on paleostress analyses from geological indicators are directly relevant to paleoseismology, neotectonics and seismic interpretations from fault-plane solutions.

He has also rightly won several distinguished laurels for overseas research programmes, namely Post-doctoral Fellowship at Penn. State University (1987-1989), European Communities Fellowship at Cardiff University, U.K. (1993), Commonwealth Fellowship at Cardiff University (2003-04) INSA-Royal Society Exchange Visit at Cardiff University (1996), INSA-Royal Society Exchange Visit at Cardiff University (2007), and INSA-DFG Exchange Programme Visit at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2011).
