Summary

Gautam Bhattacharyya obtained his B.Sc with Physics Honours, M.Sc in Physics, and Ph.D in Theoretical High Energy Physics (1993), all from Calcutta University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Theory Division, CERN, Geneva, Switzerland (Jan 1994 to Dec 1995), and then at Pisa University, Pisa, Italy (Jan 1996 to Dec 1997). He joined Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics as a permanent faculty in Jan 1998, where he is currently a Senior Professor (I-Grade, since 2019). In 2007 he spent his sabbatical at CERN as a `Paid Scientific Associate (5 months), and in 2012 he spent his sabbatical at T.U. Dortmund as a Mercator Visiting Professor (6 months).  He has made several academic visits to institutions such as CERN (Geneva), ICTP (Trieste), Univ of Paris (Orsay), CEA Saclay, MPI Heidelberg, DESY (Hamburg), IST (Lisbon), Kavli IPMU (Univ Tokyo) for scientific collaborations.

Academic And Research Achievements: Bhattacharyya has extensively worked in different areas of theoretical particle physics.  Among other things, together with his collaborators he has placed important limits on the strengths of different nonstandard interactions from various sources of experimental data. Many of his works are well cited, some of them have been cited by Particle Data Group. His current interest lies in physics of the Higgs  boson and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking mechanism in general.  He has given Plenary Review Talks in many International Conferences, notable among them are: 4th International Supersymmetry Conference in Maryland, USA (1996); 5th International WEIN Symposium in Santa Fe, USA (1998); WHEPP series in India (1996, 1998, 2008); 21st International WIN Conference in Kolkata, India (2007); XXV International Lepton-Photon Symposium, Mumbai, India (2011); International Planck Conference, Paris, France (2014). He has guided 5 Ph.D students.

Other Contributions: Bhattacharyya taught in several DST-sponsored SERC Schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics. He was the convener of the DAE-BRNS High Energy Physics Symposium at SINP in 2004, and has served in the organizing committee of many conferences.

Awards and Honours: Gautam Bhattacharyya is a recipient of B.M. Birla Science Prize in Physics (2005). He was a Regular Associate at ICTP, Trieste (1998-2005), and an Adjunct Faculty at Department of Theoretical Physics, TIFR, Mumbai (2009-12). He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Allahabad (2013) and Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Bangalore (2015). He is also a recipient of the J.C. Bose National Fellowship, SERB, DST (2017- ).
