Niranjan Chakraborty earned his BSc and MSc degrees from Dhaka University, Bangladesh. He then joined the group of Professor B.C. Tripathy in the School of Life Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and worked on molecular mechanism of action of photodynamic herbicides to earn his PhD (1993). Thereafter, he worked as a Research Scientist at Centre for Plant Molecular Biology, JNU. Dr. Chakraborty joined National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi as Scientist-II in the year 1998 and has been continuously ascending the ranks within the institute. At present, he is Scientist-VII. He took short-term assignment and worked as Research Associate at University of California, Riverside (2004-05). He also served as Guest Faculty at Tezpur University, Tezpur, Assam and Presidency University, Kolkata, West Bengal. Academic and Research Achievements: Dr. Chakraborty has been contributing to academic curriculum of several Institutes/Universities as member of Academic Council and served as member of institutional committees and RAC/SAC bodies. Dr. Chakraborty has done extensive research work in the area of plant proteomics and has been instrumental in placing India on the global plant proteomics platform. His group has been exploring the stress-responsive organelle proteomes of agriculturally important crops as a strategy to understand the molecular mechanisms of plant stress tolerance, with the ultimate goal of enhanced agricultural productivity. His laboratory can be credited with identification of myriad stress-responsive genes elaborating the complex molecular network in response to such conditions. His group has cloned and functionally characterized several of those novel genes to add to the current understanding of the molecular-genetic mechanisms underlying dehydration tolerance in plants. Dr. Chakraborty has supervised work of several post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students. Other Contributions: Dr. Chakraborty is Asia Coordinator of International Plant Proteomics Organization (INPPO). He is member Editorial Board: Scientific Reports, Rice Science; Proteomic Society, India; Society for Biological Chemists (SBC); International Society for Plant Molecular Biology (ISPMB); American Society for Microbiology (ASM), USA Awards and Honours: Dr. Chakraborty is a fellow of National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi. He was awarded ICCR Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship (1988) and Biotechnology Overseas Associateship, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India (2003). |
