Mahitosh Mandal received his BSc and MSc degrees from Calcutta University. He has completed his Ph D from Indian Institute of Chemical Biology. Subsequently, he joined Hershey Medical School , PA, USA and latter on M D Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston TX,USA as Postdoctoral Fellow. Latter on he also worked as Assistant Professor at M D Anderson cancer centre, Houston, TX, USA from 2003-2006. Upon returning to India, he joined School of Medical Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur as Assistant Professor from 2006 and presently he continues to work there as Professor.
Academic and Research Achievements:. Prof Mandal has been engaged in extensive research focusing various aspect of cancer biology, both basic and applied, and are ever expanding their horizons, the main areas of interest being cancer therapeutics, drug delivery, therapeutic resistance and diagnostics. The team is a heterogeneous group working in concert with members having knowledge in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, pharmacy, biochemistry, biotechnology and chemo informatics; constantly exploring new chemotherapeutic agents from both natural and synthetic sources and of late has diversified to promising adjuvant therapies like cancer immunotherapy, photothermal therapy etc. In the field of Drug delivery systems,Dr Mandal developed several targeted delivery systems like liposomes, exosomes and a variety of nanopatricles. In an attempt to redesign these nano-carriers for homing at cancer targets, they are evaluating several possible biomarkers and their efficacy in targeted therapy. Despite rapid advancement in strategies, therapeutic resistance is the major hindrance in cancer treatment. Dr Mandal are trying to decipher the molecular mechanisms promoting radio and chemo resistance in cancer. He has publishes more than 190 papers in reputed International journals.
Other Contributions: Prof Mandal has served as EC Member of Indian Association of Cancer Research, Sectional Committee Member of West Bengal Science Academy ( WAST), Member of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and reviewers of so many journals like Cancer Research, Oncogene, Cancer Letters, etc. Presently he is Life Member of Indian Physiological Society of India, Associate Member of American Cancer Society, USA and Member of Indian Science Congress. Presently he is serving on the Editorial Board of several journals including Scientific Reports and Journal of Biological Engineering.
Awards and Honours: Prof Mandal is a JC Bose National Fellow and an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Fellow of Royal Society ( Biology), UK. Prof Mandal also received several award like Basanti Devi Amir Chand Award by ICMR, India, Prof S S Katiyar Endowment Award by Indian Science Congress, Subha Mukherjee Memorial Award by Physiological Society of India.
