Yogendra Sharma obtained a BSc in 1978, and an MSc in Physical Chemistry (1980) from Meerut University. He did his PhD at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata. He joined CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) Hyderabad as a scientist in 1988, where he worked most of his academic career and superannuated as Chief Scientist and Group Leader in 2019. He also worked as a visiting associate at the Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis from 1995-98. After his tenure at CSIR-CCMB, he was a Professor of Biological Sciences, Dean of faculty, and Deputy Director at the newly established Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Berhampur.\Academic and Research Achievements: Yogendra Sharma is a leading expert on calcium-binding proteins. Although his contribution to the field of neuronal calcium sensor-mediated regulation cannot be undermined, his major scientific contribution is much broader where decades of his research discovered and established a novel family of calcium-binding proteins that is the βγ-crystallin superfamily. The βγ-crystallins now represent the second-largest Ca2+-binding protein family after the EF-hand family (e.g., calmodulin). Reflecting his contribution, over four hundreds of proteins of the betagamma-crystallin superfamily are now annotated and assigned to the genre of the “calcium-binding proteinsâ€, thus highlighting the importance of the discovery of the Ca2+-binding motif, named as βγ-crystallin motif, identified by him and his co-workers in a series of publications. Most of these proteins are found in bacterial species, hence there is likely involvement of these proteins in pathophysiology via calcium-sensing.\Awards and Honours: Professor Sharma is a recipient of the CSIR Young Scientist Award (1992), M. Sreenivasaya Memorial Award from the Society of Biological Chemists (India), 2008. He is a Fellow of all three National Academies (the National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy), and a fellow of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences. He is a Founder Fellow of Telangana Academy of Sciences. He was also awarded the DST-SERB National J C Bose Fellowship (2019-2024).\ |
