Summary

Dr. Pramod Garg graduated (M.B.B.S.) and did his masters (M.D. Internal Medicine) from the King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, India and later completed his gastroenterology fellowship (D.M.) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is a physician scientist with major research interests in pancreatic diseases with >140 articles in international and national peer-reviewed journals including several seminal papers in high impact journals such as JAMA, Gastroenterology, Annals of Internal medicine and Gut (h-index 40).

Research Highlights: His group has shown intra-acinar trypsinogen activation and oxidative stresses in the pathophysiology of acute pancreatitis at the cellular level, and how local inflammatory responses evolve into systemic inflammation through the pivotal role of IL-6. He has provided a new conceptual model of primary and secondary organ failure due to sterile and sepsis related inflammation in acute pancreatitis. His group’s significant work on non-surgical treatment for severe pancreatitis has been notable. In chronic pancreatitis, his group’s seminal work has re-defined the disease, discovered new mutations/ polymorphisms in SPINK1, CLDN2, MORC4, CFTR genes through GWAS and identified the role of oxidative stress in disease progression. Building on the basic science work, his group has developed optimized medical therapy for chronic pancreatitis. His group has shown that genetically determined and not alcohol related chronic pancreatitis is a pre-malignant condition highlighting the role of SPINK1 mutation in pancreatic cancer due to chronic inflammation.

Other Contributions: He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, the apex scientific body of ICMR, a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory and Appraisal Group (STAG), Department of Biotechnology, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Group, NCD division, ICMR. He is presently the Secretary-General of International Association of Pancreatology. Previously, he has served as the Associate Dean (Research), the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi,  and Governing Council member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology.

Awards and Honours: He is on the editorial board of some prestigious journals including ‘Gastroenterology’, ‘Scientific Reports’ (Nature  group) and is an associate editor of ‘Journal of Pancreatology’. He has been bestowed with many awards including ‘Om Prakash Bhasin Award’ , ‘Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize’ and ‘Hoechst Om Prakash Award’ among others by ICMR, Indian Society of Gastroenterology and other organizations.
