Summary

Summary: \r\n\r\nSanjeev Dhurandhar obtained his M. Sc. degree in 1974 from Pune University and Ph. D. degree from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Bombay University in 1980. His field of research was in the area of General Relativity and Black holes and the research was performed under the guidance of Prof. Jayant Narlikar. He was then a post-doctoral fellow at the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore till 1981. He was a senior visiting fellow at the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1987-88. He then joined the Inter University Centre for Astronomy & Astrophysics (IUCAA) in 1989 from which he superannuated in 2011. Subsequently, he was appointed as an Emeritus professor at IUCAA. \r\n\r\nAcademic and Research Achievements: Sanjeev Dhurandhar\'s main field of research is the detection/observation of gravitational waves and gravitational wave astronomy. The direct detection of gravitational waves is a spectacular discovery which received the Nobel prize in physics in 2017. The paper Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Merger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016) announces this discovery. Sanjeev Dhurandhar is one of the authors’ on this paper. \\r\\nHis main contributions to the field are listed below: (i) The use of stationary phase approximation in calculating the Fourier transform of the inspiraling binary waveform. This work was performed in 1987. It has been used in the recent discovery of gravitational waves. The work has stood the test of time of three decades. (ii) The matched filtering technique and the use of bank of templates in searching for inspiraling binary signals spanning the parameter space consisting of masses and other kinematical parameters. This general methodology was given in 1991 and its refinement has been used in the current discovery of gravitational waves. For the first time, (iii) he employed differential geometric ideas in gravitational wave data analysis. He introduced for the first time the idea of the metric for performing the analysis of gravitational wave data. \r\n\r\nOther contributions: Ex-President of the Indian Association of General Relativity and Gravitation; Member of the Ligo-Virgo-Kagra collaboration for detecting gravitational waves; Member of the International Astronomical Union. \r\n\r\nAwards and Honours: Sanjeev Dhurandhar is a recipient of several awards and honours. Among these the main ones are: (i) Meghnad Saha Memorial Gold Medal for the year 2018 for outstanding contributions to the field of physics conferred by the Asiatic Society; (ii) Milner\\\'s Special Breakthrough Prize, (shared with Ligo and Virgo Science Collaboration) awarded for the detection of gravitational waves 100 years after Einstein predicted them; (iii) Vijnan Bhushan Firodia Award for outstanding contributions to the world of science; (iv) Fellow of the American Physical Society for foundational contributions to the theoretical underpinnings of gravitational wave detection.
