Summary

Summary\r\n\r\nInderjit Singh obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) Botany in 1984 from the Hansraj College, University of Delhi, and M.Sc. (Botany) in 1986 from the Botany Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He obtained his Ph. D. in 1993 under supervision of Professor K.M.M. Dakshini, Department of Botany, University of Delhi. The title of his thesis was “The nature of interference potential of the weed Pluchea lanceolata (DC.) C. B. Clarke (Asteraceae)”. Dr. Singh did his post-doctoral works at the Lakehead University, Canada, Hokkaido Tokai University as Matsumae Fellow and at the Plant Ecochemicals Research Center, Sapporo, Japan as STA fellow. He also worked at the Assistant Research Professor, The Royal University of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences (KVL), Denmark. He joined Botany Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh in 2000 as Reader. Later in the year 2002, he joined Department of Botany, University of Delhi as Reader. Dr. Inderjit Singh joined Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems (CEMDE) as Professor in 2005 and then relocated to the Department of Environmental Studies as Professor in 2010 with additional charge of the Director of CEMDE.\r\n\r\nAcademic and Scientific Achievements: Dr. Inderjit Singh addresses fundamental and applied questions relevant to Community ecology, chemical ecology and soil ecology at regional and continental scales. At these scales, he focuses on unraveling ecological-evolutionary processes in search of new mechanisms and causes that facilitate human-mediated invasion of species in novel environments. The research program of Dr. Inderjit Singh is a global, interdisciplinary and multifaceted attempt to understand ecological and evolutionary processes by which non-native invasive plants achieve their success and influence native communities and ecosystem goods and services. His research has demonstrated that plant chemical traits form the basis of much of the ecological function of native or non-native species at various levels of ecological organization. In turn, these functions interact with climate and various biotic factors, such as soil biota, mediate the role of plant chemicals in the environment, and provide evolutionary advantages to the species. He has performed research in diverse ecosystems including deserts, grasslands, agroecosystems, boreal forests, tropical and temperate forests.\r\n\r\nOther contributions: Dr. Inderjit Singh has rich administrative experience at various University levels including (i) Director of the Centre for Environmental Management of Degraded Ecosystems since July 2005, (ii) Head of the Department of Environmental Studies, (iii) Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Delhi, (iv) Chairman, Board of Research Studies, (iv) member of the Executive Council and the Academic Council and (v) member of University Court. \r\nInderjit’s leadership and influence are reflected in many plenary or keynote talks and lectures he has been invited to give at pre-eminent international conferences and meetings. Dr. Inderjit Singh is Handling/Associate Editor of journals such as Journal of Applied Ecology (UK), Scientific Reports (UK), Biological Invasions (USA), and NewBiota (Europe).\r\n\r\nAwards and Honours: The prestigious awards and Honours Dr. Inderjit Singh has received, including the Robert H. Whittaker Distinguished Ecologist Award from the Ecological Society of America (ESA) in 2015, Distinguished Visitor Award from the University of Alberta, Canada in 2016, and Outstanding Young Weed Scientist Award, Weed Science Society of America in 2001.
