Amita Aggarwal obtained MBBS (1983) from AIIMS New Delhi and MD in Internal Medicine from AIIMS (1986). Later she did DM in Clinical Immunology from SGPGI Lucknow (1993). Later she trained at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne (1994), Centers for disease control, Atlanta, USA (1997) and Oklahoma university hospital, Oklahoma, USA in Immunology & Rheumatology (2005). She joined on the faculty at Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute, Lucknow after her training in Australia and is currently Heading the Department
Academic and Research Achievements: She is a clinician scientist, with major interest in Juvenile arthritis and SLE. In the area of Juvenile arthritis, she has studied the role of innate immune cells and gut microbiome in the pathogenesis of JIA-enthesitis related arthritis, She has setup a multi-institutional lupus network in India along with a biorepository. She has published nearly 400 papers and has written 2 books. In addition, she has taught a generation of physicians working in the field of rheumatology.
Awards and Honours: Dr Aggarwal is a recipient of several awards and honors including DBT Biosciences award (2004), overseas research associateship award of DBT (2005), Kashanika Oration award of ICMR (2005), Dr Kamala Menon Award of ICMR (2001), Shakuntala Amir Chand Award of ICMR (1998), India Institute award of University of Birmingham, UK (2019). She has delivered the Balu Athreya oration of Pediatric Rheumatology society of India (2015), IRA oration of Indian Rheumatology Association (2012) and Zydus oration for significant scientific contributions to Rheumatology (2002). She is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India), National Academy of Science, Allahabad and National Academy of Medial Science (India)
Others: Dr Aggarwal has also served as the President of Indian Rheumatology Association as well as editor of Indian Journal of Rheumatology.
